Unless you've been living under a rock, you should know that Meghan O'Brien's books are erotically inclined and not for the faint of heart when it comes to love scenes. What sets her work apart is that her novels are character driven and generally intelligent in addition to being titillating in the romance department. While the premises/plots of O'Brien's novels can be complex (The Three), many times they are very simple, yet satisfying (Thirteen Hours, The Night Off). Per the title, "The Sex Therapist Next Door" has a simple premise and one that obviously lends itself to many love scenes - but like her earlier works, it delivers on character arcs and dramatic tension. Though the erotic scenes are fast and frequent, there is an evolution to them as the characters battle their inner demons and the deeper connection that threatens their no-strings-attached beginnings. I haven't loved all of O'Brien's books (I didn't get past the sample of her last one) but this one was as satisfying as some of her classics - definitely a keeper! O'Brien never fails to deliver on hot sex scenes, so I'll give this 2.5 stars. There are a few things though that bugged me about this book. 1. The plot was more shallow than a puddle. There was not enough character development to get me to care about either one of the main characters. I get that Diana was in an abusive relationship for several years, but how did that suddenly make her turn around and become a bully? I get if she's scared, but for her to call Jude names after she asked her to stop, or at the end when she straight up just yells at Jude for being honest? I couldn't really get to a point where I was rooting for Diana. And there were times when she was also straight up rude to her supposed BFF. I couldn't really see what Jude found so great about her. Perhaps if there was more depth to her, like showcasing what else she does for her job other than host sex workshops, maybe I could get that she has an altruistic side to her and actually care. 2. Age difference is not that big a deal and I felt like it was overplayed too much because there wasn't much else of a plot going on. Also another reason for me to not like Diana because she kept bringing it up time and time again. 3. Is it just me or do all of O'Brien's characters have the same vocabulary? It seems everyone in her stories uses the term "pussy" or "labia" or compares their state of arousal to some sort of waterfall. I really wanted to give this book a chance, but the lack of plot and character development was disappointing.
